christmas reading
December 21, 2010This is what I’ll be reading over Christmas:

How about you?
Born 7 weeks early in an elevator I found my salvation in geek culture.
Growing up I could spend hours and hours alone in the ocean fantasizing myself
away on fantastic adventures. Not much has changed since.
This is what I’ll be reading over Christmas:

How about you?
Movies or TV-series from your youth you used to LOVE but are afraid won’t hold up today? GO!
I’ll start it of with: Pirates of Dark Water and The Net.
How about you?
Schooling myself in the wonderful world of Anime I asked this question yesterday:
Which is the ONE obvious or hidden gem movie I absolutely can’t miss?
My hopes is that the answers compiled would form a list of both the absolutely obvious ones to see,
but also the not so obvious fantastic and interesting hidden gems out there.
Here is what I’ve gotten so far:
- Howl’s Moving Castle
- Ponyo
- Cowboy Bebop series
- Lupin the 3rd: the castle of cagliostro
- Spirited Away
- Princess Mononoke
- Appleseed 1&2
- Paprika
- Akira
- Grave of the Fireflies
- Perfect Blue
- Dagger of Kamui
- Vampire Hunter D (1985 version)
So, which is the ONE obvious or hidden gem movie I absolutely can’t miss?
Keep the suggestions coming.

So what am I working away on all those wee hours you ask?
Here is a little tease…
“To save her little brother a young bullied orphan girl teams up with an old punch drunk boxer to take down the responsible bullies in the only way she knows how to… becoming superheroes, powers or no powers.”
– Extraordinaries!
To be continued.
Is it weird that my dream score for “Extraordinaries!” is a mix between the works of
John Williams+Spielberg and 65daysofstatic?
Deadline for the 1st draft of “Extraordinaries!” is Dec 31 & as I’ll head up 5AM every weekday to do 3 or more pages I decided to share some of that with you. It can be a uncompleted sentence, a line of dialogue, a block of description or just about anything inbetween. Hopefully it will give you a glimpse into my world…
Smiles at them. Then bolts for the door and through to...
CUT TO:
INT. ABANDONED INDUSTRIAL BUILDING – NIGHT
...thousands and thousands of feathers twirling like snowflakes in the air, people busy pillow fighting, their laughs are drenched in the electronic music and the frenzy of neon laser lights. From this ALMA emerges.
At the other end – the gang of bullies with the leader.
Classic stand-off.
People busy pillow fighting start to notice the small dressed up superhero in the middle of the room.
Alma starts to peel of layer by layer from her costume.
One by one her:
-gauntlets.
-cloak.
-wooden sword.
Drops to the floor.
Lastly she removes her mask and dries of the makeup with a rough swoop by her arms length.
Where a second ago there was a bad-ass superhero, now left standing is just a young innocent girl.

Alma forms a mask shape with her hands and put them over her eyes.
ALMA
Of course! We can do it. We can do it! WE can be the superheroes.
The old man is not convinced. But she is on fire with the idea and he let’s her go with it.
ALMA (CONT’D)
Now... let’s see what you’ve got in this cart of yours.
Alma is turning his overloaded dirty and beaten down shoppingcart filled with anything and everything that he still owns inside out. Picks up a patch here, a pair of glasses there all while she fits the findings out on herself and him.
ALMA (CONT’D)
This will be perfect on you!

Day 1:
One last lingering look back at the safe and warm beach, with its calming waves, fair sunshine and lovingly father.
Should I stay or should I go?
Not an easy choice.
Throws a “sad but I have to go kiss” at him.
ALMA
(to herself)
The only way out is through.
Then journeys in.
